What is the LK Massage Programme?

What is the LK Massage Programme?

A Research Based Massage Programme, which helps deliver a pain

relieving option and a positive birth experience for all

The award winning LK Massage Programme is a unique collection of specific and easy to learn massage techniques that have been designed by midwives over many years, to support active labour and natural birth. The massage links closely with breathing control and visualisation. The LK Massage Programme is a pleasurable coping strategy to use, for first time mums and those with other children; equally transferable wherever you choose to birth your baby.

Enjoy the last month of pregnancy and prepare for labour in a relaxed, calm and confident way. If during this time you experience problematic backache, use the back massage as described and feel the benefit. Limit your need for drugs in childbirth by trying these effective massage techniques.

The Programme encourages upright positions and free movement in labour – ensuring you maintain control over your labour. It helps to prepare you and your baby physiologically and psychologically for a positive birth experience.

The Massage Programme is learnt between 35 - 37 weeks of pregnancy in order to enhance the normal physiological adaptations that occur naturally at this time.  It can be taught beyond 37 weeks and is a one off 3 hour class.

Who performs the massage?

Your birth partner will perform a majority of the massage, resulting in a well practiced partnership over the final month of pregnancy in preparation for labour.

"The Massage Programme made me feel that the labour was not all down to me - S would be there to help ease the pain and it took a lot of  my fear away to know that he would be actively involved. The actual massage we did before the birth was very relaxing and brought us together which was lovely" (Mother)

"Learning The Massage Programme helped me maintain a high level of physical contact, more than just holding her hand or mopping her brow"  (Partner)

What happens if my birth partner is temporarily unavailable?

Two self massage techniques are taught in the class that you can use to practice your slow rhythmic breathing and visualisation over the last month of pregnancy. These well rehearsed breathing and visualisation elements of the Programme will support you when your partner is temporarily unavailable to perform the massage. Many women find these elements effective on the journey to their chosen place of birth.

Can I use the Programme if I have had a caesarean section before?

Yes, the Programme is very suitable for women who wish to experience a vaginal birth following a caesarean section. It is designed to encourage upright positions and free movement. Continual fetal heart monitoring may be recommended during your labour and should not inhibit the use of the Programme.

Can I use the Programme if I plan a waterbirth?

Yes, the Programme combines well with water. During the class these options will be discussed.
