Massage and its value as an analgesic within a variety of NHS settings is of increasing importance. Although further scientific research is recommended, massage and other complementary therapies are growing in popularity with considerable health benefit within the maternity setting (NICE intrapartum guidelines).
Many women experience backache and insomnia in the last few weeks of pregnancy. This is a time when women and their birth partners start getting anxious about the forthcoming birth and want to prepare together. Reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation during this time enhances the sleep cycle and encourages confidence and well being.
Massage therapists are well equipped to offer a valuable service during this exciting time. Learning the LK Massage Programme and developing an understanding of pregnancy and childbirth will enhance your already honed massage skills. You will learn about pregnancy and labour, safety issues when performing massage during pregnancy, and the unique basic LK Massage techniques. In order to learn the skills required to teach couples the essential elements of the Programme in the last month of pregnancy, you will need to undertake the Trainers course - an additional 2 days, a minimum of 3 months following successful completion of the Basic Course.
The LK Massage Programme was originally designed by a practising midwife / massage therapist. It has developed further as a response to an observational feasibility study (2003) and scientific research (2005), into its current format by combining new essential elements from two additional specialist midwives. The three midwives now instruct on the courses and are available for advice following completion. The aim is to give women and their birth partners a non pharmacological coping strategy to use during late pregnancy and birth. The birth partner takes an active role, supported by the midwife/doula.
It is essential that therapists have a basic understanding of pregnancy and birth prior to attending the Basic Course.
We recommend attending a pregnancy course following your general massage training - Childbirth Essentials offers a comprehensive 2 day pregnancy course designed to provide an introduction to pregnancy and birth.
